7 groups of young Chinese unwilling to work

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-18 14:00:17

Chinanews, Oct. 18 - Shanghai media reported that according to an
authoritative survey, there are 7 groups of young Chinese who are
unwilling to work. Negative impacts of unemployed youth have become a
hotspot that arouses close attention of all.
The first group is those with low educational level and uncompetitive
skills who can only find a job in medium and low-end labor markets but
are too choosy and unwilling to accept tough low-income jobs. They
account for about 30% of these 7 groups.
The second group is college and university graduates who expect too much
of and are too fastidious about their future posts to settle down with a
job. They constitute some 15% of these 7 groups.
The third group is those who have lost their jobs but unwilling to accept
an offer not better than their former posts. They make up approximately
10% of these 7 groups.
The fourth groups are those who choose to give up their jobs for various
reasons such as too strained work, maladjustment to work environment,
poor interpersonal relationships and further study. They compose around
10% of these 7 groups.
The fifth group is those clouded with illusions of setting up their own
businesses who are unsuccessful in their attempts but unwilling to work
for others. They form circa 15% of these 7 groups.
The sixth group is habitual job hoppers. 95% of new college and
university graduates plan to change their jobs in one year. They are
over-confident about their high educational level and therefore choose to
frequently change their jobs. Unfortunately, however, they often end up
jobless. They build up 10% of these 7 groups.
They last group are only-children who are ready to give up and depend on
their parents, who are able and willing to support them. Thus there is no
need for them to hurry and find a job. They take up 10% of these 7 groups.

Mainland population below 1.37 bln by 2010

The single child certificated seen in this undated file photo. China has
implemented the family-planning policy in 1979. [baidu]

QINGDAO, Sept. 17 - China's population and family planning minister on
Friday said China will work to limit its mainland population below 1.37
billion by 2010.
Zhang Weiqing, minister in charge of the National Population and Family
Planning Commission (NPFPC), said that China has been working to build a
new mechanism featuring management according tolaw, self-governance of
villagers or residents, quality services, policy impetus and
comprehensive management as an overall approachtowards the population
issue during the past few years.
On a workshop held in Qingdao of the eastern China's Shandong province,
Zhang stressed that China will keep its family planning policy in place
to maintain a low birth level.
To some extent, China's population growth has been brought undercontrol
in the past 30 years, with a steady growth of 100 million people every
seven years, postponing China's 1.3-billion Population Day by four years
to fall on early this year. Accordingto data released by NPFPC, given
China failed to implement the family planning policy, China's population
would be nearly 400 million more than the present figure.
Zhang said China should continue to improve its population legal system
in an effort to work out laws and regulations on managing unbalanced sex
ratio at birth, reducing birth defect rate, strengthening management of
population control medicines and family planning services to eliminate
practices that hurt people'slegal rights and interests.
He also stressed that work should be done to study population policies
focusing on all-round development of humans and
implementinterest-oriented policies to award and assist families
practicingfamily planning.

Scientists plan 22nd South Pole expedition

www.chinanews.cn 2005-09-01 09:37:11

(Source: China Daily)

Sept. 1 - Chinese scientists will start their annual research expedition
to the South Pole in late November this year, the 22nd of its kind.
After scaling Dome A - the highest ice cap in Antarctica - late last
year, Chinese scientists will focus on inland research in the Antarctic
area this time, said Yang Huigen, deputy director of the Shanghai-based
Polar Research Institute of China, the scientist leading the expedition.
The expedition will mainly focus on three research fields including polar
area upper atmospheric physics, aerolithology and oceanography, Yang told
China Daily yesterday.
One of the major missions on this expedition is the Mount Groves Project,
which focuses on collecting and researching aeroliths in Mount Groves
area, 460 kilometres to China's Zhongshan Station on the coast. An
aerolith is a meteorite made of rock.
The expedition is expected to start on November 20 from Shanghai, aboard
the Xuelong (Snow Dragon) ship, a polar science research icebreaker.
Dozens of scientists in various fields including polar glaciology, upper
atmospheric physics, bioecology and physical oceanography are expected to
participate in the expedition. The research ship can hold up to 128
passengers, including 40 crew members.

AIDS insurance on sale in Henan province

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-26 14:30:52

Chinanews, Zhengzhou, Oct. 25 (By He Xiaocong) - News from Henan
subsidiary of Tai Ping Life Insurance revealed that starting this month,
what the mainland insurance industry once viewed as "taboo" of Aids
insurance will soon be offered as a stand-alone product in the Henan
market. It was learned that "Aids Insurance" has a one year coverage
period with a highest payout of 300,000 RMB (US$37,500). Industry
insiders pointed out this move reflected the first breach of a "taboo"
amongst the mainland's insurance industry.
It was learned that this "Aids insurance" to be offered in the Henan
market has been approved by the head office of Tai Ping Insurance. But
because some parts of Henan have high incidence of Aids, the head office
requested strict risk controls when marketing this policy. It was
discovered by reporters that at present, "Aids insurance" can only be
purchased by businesses or work units on behalf of their staff and cannot
be bought by individuals. The primary targets of new clients for this
policy would be the medical and judicial industries and would involve
foreign enterprises and cannot even exclude the entertainment industry.
Because the terms of this Aids policy include payment to Aids victims who
contract the diseases from heterosexual and homosexual contact as well as
from other modes of transmission, there are different views regarding
this policy. Some people worry that because this policy provides coverage
for Aids caused by a chaotic lifestyle, it is a reason for concern.
Others said that because this type of policy can reduce the burden of
some of the insured, it is a more humanistic offering.
It was revealed that through October 24th, Henan still has not one single
work unit that has signed up this type of insurance.

A customer was appreciating the white jade "Tang Priest Pot" in a jewelry

was carved in a natural white jade from Kunlun Mountains by Zhu Shiping,
a Yangzhou industrial artist. It took him two months to complete it. The
spout looks like the head of the Tang Priest, and the top resembles a
Buddha hat. The Chinese character of "Fo" (Buddha) in the Xing
calligraphy becomes the handle, with decoration of a cassock on the body.
The unique sculpture and its creativeness reached the peak of perfection.

China popularizing higher education

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-14 14:37:27

Chinanews, Oct 13 - Yesterday, the Ministry of Education released China's
educational progress and major reform achievements during the "Tenth
Five-Year Plan" period, showing that the country has laid emphasis on
development of education in rural areas and effectively stimulated
popularization and consolidation of compulsory education. Higher
education has entered a phase of popularization, with the quality of its
people prominently improved.
The rapid development of education has enabled China to initially fulfill
its goal of turning a nation with large population into a nation with
vast human resources. By 2004, people above 15 years old received 8.3
years of education on average, and degree holders reached 70 million. The
average level of education rose from primary school to junior high school.
A spokesperson of the Ministry of Education said that China has given top
priority to development of education in rural areas, having implemented a
series of major projects such as "compulsory education programs in
poverty-stricken areas" and "'Two basic' Education Program in the West"
(to basically popularize nine-year compulsory education and eliminate
illiterate youth and middle aged), and effectively popularized and
consolidated compulsory education. By 2004, coverage of "Two-Basic" for
the population reached 93.6%, and gross enrollment rate in junior middle
schools reached 94.1%. Illiteracy rate of the young and middle-aged was
around 4%, and adult literacy rate was in the leading group among
developing countries with large population.
In 2004, total enrollment of higher education exceeded 20 million,
including 13.33 million college students and junior college students and
820,000 graduate students on campus, 2.4 times and 2.7 times that of
2000, respectively. Higher education recorded a gross enrollment rate of
above 19%, entering an internationally recognized stage of popularization.

China's economy at key period of softlanding

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-09 09:14:21

(Source: Xinhua)

Oct. 9 - China's economy is now at a key period for softlanding in light
of growing investment, the driving force of its fast economic expansion,
according to a report by a taskforce for the State Development and Reform
Commission.
China's growth of investment has been moving in the direction of
coordinated and stable development during the first eight months of this
year. "The whole macro-economy and investment has entered a key period of
softlanding," according to a report published by a recent edition of the
China Securities Journal.
Urban investment during the eight months totaled 4.115 trillion yuan (508
billion US dollars), up 27.4 percent year-on-year, or 2.9 percentage
points lower than those for the past two years , the report says.
The growth rate of investment has now been on a gradually stable and
rational track, according to the report.
China began to curb investment in overheating sectors such as cement,
aluminium, steel and real estate early last year through tightened money
and land supply.
Meanwhile, China encouraged investment in agriculture, energy, education
and transportation for coordinated economic and social development.
China faces a critical shortage of energy due to increasing demand
arising from fast economic development since 1978.
The economy has been growing at an annual average of 9.4 percent.
The report says the trend for China's investment and financing is stable
decline as a result of two-year macroeconomic regulation.
The output and performance of downstream sectors, as indicated by the
country's processing sector, the engine of the country's economy, is now
contracting, the report says.
That will relatively reduce demand for raw material and other middle
stream products, and for energy and other upstream products, it says.
Contracting demand from the perspective of external and domestic trade
indicate the expansion of investment and financing will be restrained.
The year-on-year growth of China's sales revenues of manufactured goods
for the eight months stood at 27.6 percent, down by 5 percentage points,
although overall revenues of retail trade and housing were still growing.
China's foreign trade grew by 23.5 percent during the eight months, down
by 14.7 percentage points.
The report said China should be prudent in regulating the scale of
investment and financing to maintain stable investment growth, and
continue its prudent fiscal and monetary policies for a new cycle of
economic growth.
The taskforce also urged the Chinese Government to open up its capital
market for private business to ease the difficulty in financing as
experienced by the country's medium- and small firms.
It also called on the government to increase money and land supply to
what are called three economic growth belts -- the Yangtze River Delta,
Pearl River Delta and Bohai Economic Belt.
The Yangtze River Delta includes Shanghai, the country's biggest city and
an emerging international financial, business and shipping center. The
Pearl River delta, which borders Hong Kong, is known as the country's
major foreign trade player.
The Bohai Economic Belt contains Beijing and the port city of Tianjin,
two of the country's four municipalities under the direct jurisdiction of
the Chinese Government.
The taskforce said China should continue its efforts to encourage
investment in the agriculture, transportation and education sectors while
boosting domestic demand through increasing products and services
affordable to middle and low income groups.
