adult panda, Qing Zaid, during a trip to a research center in Chengdu,
southwest China's Sichuan province January 25, 2006. The trip highlighted
a sentimental U.S.-Chinese tie amid strains over trade, human rights and
other issues. "For more than 30 years, pandas have been a very practical
symbol of the conservation relationship between the United States and
China," Zoellick told reporters later, standing beside an outdoor pen as
two adult pandas wrestled inside. Zoellick ended his three-day visit to
China Wednesday.

zero-profit medicines in Beijing showed up in Caishikou and Baizhifang

south Beijing. Medicines for daily use constitute more than half of the
200-odd zero-profit medicines on the special counters. This pharmacy
promoted the zero-profit medicine counters to realize zero-price-hike for
the first time, as those medicines passed directly from the factories to
customers.

Beijing plans legislation on mental health

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-10 15:49:38

Chinanews, Jan. 10 - According to the Procuratorial Daily, Zhang Yin,
deputy director of the Legislative Affairs Office affiliated to Standing
Committee of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress, revealed recently
that the committee was planning to constitute "regulations on mental
health."
Zhang indicated that as incidents of mental health occurred from time to
time in recent years, Beijing Municipal People's Congress considered
legislating the "regulations on mental health" to care for public mental
health, prevent occurrence of social tragedies and improve life quality
of Beijing citizens.
During the Chinese society's transition period at present, social
conflicts and pressure on competition are on the rise. Moreover, due to
faster pace of life and work and other social factors, mental disease has
become a quite serious disease among China's categories of illness.
Expenditures on mental disease are estimated to account for one fourth of
the country's total in 2020. Therefore, related experts believe that
there is no time to delay to legislate on mental health.
Zhang Yin said that in addition to "regulations on mental health,"
Beijing Municipal People's Congress will also establish regulations on
letters and calls in line with the city's practical situations and
relevant regulations of the State Council so as to acquaint Beijing
citizens with channels of letters and calls to express their opinions.
Beijing Municipal People's Congress will also formulate energy-saving
solutions in keeping with the city's stern situation of energy supply and
current capacities and conditions.

Amis visitors from Taiwan and a Suzhou tourist (middle) were singing and
dancing on a boat on Guilin's Li River on Jan.1st. Thirty-five Taiwanese
who participated in the "2005 Guilin-Taiwan minority group exchange week"

and mountains while cruising along the Li River. Many Taiwanese even
dialed back to their hometown to tell their families of the wonderful
landscapes of mainland and their great joy.

Mock hearing on HIV/AIDS held in Beijing

www.chinanews.cn 2005-11-27 17:23:37

(Source: CRIENGLISH.com)

Nov. 27 - A mock hearing on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment was held
Saturday at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
The hearing was the second of its kind, first initiated by Chinese legal
experts in 2002.
The hearing focused on the legitimacy of compulsory HIV tests on patients
before operations, availability of clean syringes, and detoxification
therapies provided by the government for drug addicts.
Sixteen people participated in the debate, including a person with HIV, a
doctor and a policeman.
Professor Li Dun, who organized the two hearings, said the second was
different because officials and lawmakers did not chair the hearing, and
the conclusion of the proceedings will be briefed to the State Council
and the Ministry of Health.
Ethicist Wang Ruotao argued that people should only take HIV tests when
they donate their blood or organs, while Doctor Xu Lianzhi said patients
should be encouraged to test as long as they are adequately informed
about the test and its ramifications.
At present, patients have to pay for the HIV test before operations in
case of potential medical disputes, including infection of the virus to
doctors via blood.
Meanwhile, Wu Zunyou, a researcher on AIDS prevention, claimed drug
addicts should be allowed to use clean syringes and methadone, a safer
and more-controlled alternative to heroin, which would help curb the
spread of the disease and drug-related crimes.
However, Professor Qiu Zeqi with Peking University noted the move would
not help address the root causes of HIV/AIDS, saying it is a sign of
appeasement on drug abuse.

Suzhou brides developed a custom of bringing along a wooden closestool at

pregnancy. Meeting this beautiful wish, some businessmen promoted mini
