Folk performances in the old street of Linhuan Town, Suixi County, Anhui
Province fascinated spectators on April 12. On that day, the town's first
folk art festival opened the curtain in the over 600-year-old street
which dated back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The first folk art
festival showcased many folk art programs created by the masses with
their hands and hearts, such as drum dance, stilt show, lion dance, land

China aims at self-reliance in military changes, expert

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-07 18:33:20

Chinanews, Beijing, April 7 - A Chinese military expert recently said
that military changes in China are different from those in western
countries in that China will largely rely on its own efforts and take
into consideration its past and present condition and this will be the
key to the success of the reform with Chinese characteristics.
In an interview given to reporters, Vice Director of the Military Thought
and History Teaching and Research Department of the National Defense
University Sun Kejia said in terms of organizational leadership, there
are many restrictive and impacting factors in the western countries
including the United States, while in China it is the from-top-to-bottom
case, in which initiation is made by top party and military leaders.
Compared with western countries, the expert said, China is a latecomer in
military changes. While both the two have their eyes on informationalized
war in carrying out military reform, they have started from a very
different level: in the United States, military changes are done when
U.S. armed forces are overall highly mechanized where as Chinese armed
force lag, which is far behind the United States is that they are only in
semi-mechanized.
Although China is a late-comer in military reform, it has its advantages
as such, said Sun, for it can thus draw upon or do directly obtain the
achievements and experiences from the western countries military reform
and put them to use in combination with its own characteristics.

"One hundred Chinese beauties" carving

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-05 17:07:42

Famous stone carving master Lin Jiajun from Suzhou City and several
hundreds of craftsmen spent ten years carving out a picture named "one
hundred Chinese beauties". These pretty women include the weaving girl,
the goddess in the moon, Goddess of Sky-patching, Xi Shi, Wang Zhaojun
and Diao Chan (the last three belong to the Four Ancient Chinese
Beauties). This artwork consumed 24 tons of gems and boulders, and the
silk skirt of Empress Wu Zetian on the 56th picture was inlaid with
400-odd gems alone. The carving was once valued at 200 million RMB (US$25
million).
