EU anti-dumping targets Chinese furniture

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-26 14:29:28

Chinanews, Apr.26 - EU anti-dumping investigations recently took aim at
Chinese furniture. German and Italian furniture manufacturers are
pressing the European Commission to launch an anti-dumping investigation
into furniture exported by China.
It is learned that the European Furniture Manufacturers Confederation
represented by German and Italian furniture manufacturers is very likely
to submit a formal anti-dumping document to lodge a complaint in the
following one and a half months. This anti-dumping investigation aims at
a vast range of Chinese furniture, including sofas, kitchen furniture and
office chairs.
Insiders said that in recent years, Chinese furniture exports have
improved in quality and elevated its grade rapidly, and the competitive
pricing edge has earned Chinese furniture a place in the global market.
Nonetheless, high-quality and low-priced Chinese furniture has caught the
attention of furniture manufacturers in other countries, and its exports
has frequently encountered trade barriers set by importing countries.
In January 2005, the U.S. Department of Commerce decided to take
anti-dumping measures against China's furniture exports and imposed
anti-dumping duties (ranging from 4.9% to 198%) on certain imported
wooden bedroom furniture. In November last year, the Canadian furniture
industry put forward a safeguard investigation application and demanded
the authorities levy three years of high supplementary taxes on Chinese
furniture.
